Where can I find a near ready to run RC car that is upgradable / moddable over time as my five year old grows into it and out of it? Xrazygonuts RC 4x4 for your time.
Preferably a 4x4 all terrain type as the backyard is a bit of a mess. It’s not hard to find stuff, but I don’t know what I should keep in mind as far as letting the little guy ram it into the fence/wall/garage/sandbox/little brother and have it be repairable and moddable too.
I have a bad memory of my Sears Lobo running into the basement wall, dying on impact, and that being the end of that.
Extra points for Wagon style body!

Hey! There’s a Kinja blog for RCs if you wanna check it out!
http://smallscalebashers.kinja.com/
Also, I always suggest ECX for any first-time RC driver.
ECX makes a 4x4 version of the Torment SCT. I had a 2WD Torment one time, and it was amazing. I put a low-powered brushless system in it and 2.8s on all corners. That thing was a blast, and I had no complications with it whatsoever.

No idea. If they have moddable off road RC cars that will survive my future demolitions engineer five year old at the dollar store I’m all set!

I didn’t know there was a RC Kinja! And I’ll check out ECX. Anyone know how to X-post?

I’ve heard that Axial trucks are pretty tough and there’s a lot of support and aftermarket for those. They are a little pricy though. I’m not really sure of something cheaper.

Thanks! I have a feeling this is something my kid is really going to get into, and I definitely don’t mind. He’s ALWAYS building something out of whatever is around (mostly a few types of connectable blocks) and I’d really like for him to feel empowered to break stuff and fix stuff and mod stuff beyond lego type things. And I get to learn along the way so BONUS.

You’re in!

They’re far from tough. Axial only did slow crawlers before they did the Exo, and it really showed how flimsy their construction is.

I haven’t owned one so I’m just going off of what people said.

In this case slow is a feature. Little guy has never even played a normal console videogame so I’m guessing controller use is going to be a steep learning curve.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
A XMODS for indoors, (very upgradable, lots of stuff for This for sale on eBay, don’t get the new ones. Those are crap. The STREET/EVO ones are the best.
And Traxxas rustler. It can go off road stuff, and teaches the kid how suspension/steering/diff works.

The five year old in me wants a Redcat Rampage MT http://www.redcatracing.com/Rampage-MT-V3
all you need is gasoline and batteries, and + you can almost sit your kid on it and drive him around,

Those crawler things are so slow that you can’t crash against things with them. They are pretty fun too even though they lack speed.
